About Weather Service Delays

During extreme snow events, STR may utilize delayed starts to provide collection service as feasible, given snow removal operations throughout the service area.

STR will make every effort to complete collection routes as scheduled.  Customers have the option to bring their weekly Solid Waste to the Transfer Station at no charge due to the inaccessibility of their streets.

STR will pick up all accumulated solid waste the following week.
STR will make every effort to pick up customers in our American River Disposal service area, dependent on road closures and access to mud slide areas.

Notice to Bear Box Owners

Please be sure our employees can access your bear box on your pickup day. Bear boxes must be shoveled and cleared of snow, including a path to the bear box and any berms. If reasonable access is not provided, your bear box will not be serviced that week. If you use a snow removal contactor, please ask them to include this service. Thank you for your cooperation.

Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners
Master Gardeners are community members who have been trained under the direction of the University of California Cooperative Extension. Each volunteer assists the UC Cooperative Extension by providing practical, scientific gardening information to the home gardeners in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

We are seeing construction utility boxes being used as enclosures for trash. While we appreciate that some customers are purchasing these utility boxes with the best intentions of addressing wildlife issues, utility boxes are not designed to be used as garbage enclosures. They do not hold 32-gallon trash cans. Bagged and loose garbage in utility boxes attracts bears to the smell.

We are not able to empty these utility boxes with our equipment and our employees are not able to unload them by hand. Trying to unload them will lead to damage to the utility box and injury to our employees.

South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling is administering a Bear Box Loan Program, which provides no interest loans for installation of approved animal-resistant garbage can enclosures. Please feel free to contact our office at 530-541-5105 if you wish to discuss this or other service options.
